What are San Marzano tomatoes?
San Marzano tomatoes are classified as a plum tomato that in comparison to Roma tomatoes, the fruit is thinner and much more pointed. Their origin is 100% Italian, and they are the crème de la crème when it comes down to use.
Okay... so what’s the difference between a San Marzano and a classic Roma tomato?
Aside from being the gold star standard as mentioned above, the flesh of a San Marzano is much thicker with fewer seeds and less acidic. These are a few of the reasons why its favoured over a Roma tomato when canning, or creating authentic Italian recipes (pizza sauce, pasta etc.).
